Game 20: UMD vs Ferris State (Florida College Classic)

Posted on 11:29 by Unknown
ESTERO, Fla. -- For UMD, the 1-0 loss to Maine was its worst Friday performance in some time. In fact, UMD had not lost a game on a Friday since falling to Notre Dame Oct. 19.

Now, for the first time all season, really, UMD has a chance to come back the day after a poor performance and atone for it. I'm very intrigued to see how this team responds.

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Posted on 09:41 by Unknown
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Just when things started to show signs of looking up, it's gone back into the swirl of negativity for the UMD Bulldogs.

4-1-1 over six games going into the Christmas break, the Bulldogs spent 40 minutes looking like they ate too many cookies during the bye, and a two-win Maine team got the one break it needed to burn UMD.

The break happened when Martin Ouellette made a save

Game 19: UMD vs Maine (Florida College Classic)

Posted on 14:31 by Unknown
ESTERO, Fla. -- Greetings from Germain Arena, which sits 10 miles or so south of Fort Myers, where the UMD hotel is located.

This is the home of the ECHL's Florida Everblades, and also the 12-year home of a college hockey tournament.

People wonder how the hell this works. I'll confess I'm also curious to an extent, but the Everblades have run this thing long enough for me to realize that it's

UMD Prepares for Business in the Sun

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The palm trees scattered around the hotel property add a sense of "Holy crap, we're in Florida" to the fact that we're in Florida.

For hockey.

Holy crap.

Before incorporating some beach time into the itinerary, the UMD men's hockey team has business to take care of. The 13th annual Florida College Classic is underway Friday, with UMD playing Maine after Cornell takes on

UMD Preps for Florida Excursion

Posted on 06:45 by Unknown
There are worse things in the country to prepare for than a late-December trip to Florida.

Yes, UMD is still a game under .500 (7-8-3), but at 4-1-1 over the last six games, the Bulldogs got things going in the right direction before a weekend off. During that off week, UMD players wrapped up final exams for the first semester, and also got to take some time away from the rink to celebrate

Bob Nielson Leaves UMD For Division I Gig

Posted on 07:52 by Unknown
Speculation ramped up late last week that UMD football coach and athletic director Bob Nielson could be on his way out. In its search for a new coach, Division I Western Illinois University listed Nielson as a finalist for the position last week, and interviewed him on Monday.

Tuesday, it began to become more clear that there was at least a real chance Nielson would move on.

Now, it appears to

Game 18: UMD at Alaska Anchorage

Posted on 18:20 by Unknown
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- For UMD, it's the final game of the season's first half. It's a first half that included a few low points, but the last ten games have generally been pretty good for the Bulldogs, starting with a series at North Dakota in mid-November.

It isn't enough to completely shake a poor start to the WCHA season, but UMD can still get to 13 points with a Saturday win in Anchorage. It

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: Here We Go Again

Posted on 00:43 by Unknown
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The definition of insanity is usually described as something remotely resembling the following:

Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.

With that in mind, UMD is teetering on the brink of insanity when it comes to Saturday games. Entering this weekend, UMD is 0-6-2 in such situations, with four losses (Ohio State, Notre Dame, St. Cloud State

UMD Heads North for Final Time With WCHA

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- With more schedule holes to fill, and the attraction of two extra home games in exchange for a trip here, there is no guarantee that UMD is done making trips to Alaska.

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: UMD Rides Seniors to Hard-Fought Win

Posted on 06:44 by Unknown
At various points this season, two of UMD's main lines have been productive. Tony Cameranesi and Mike Seidel have done plenty of damage this season, and the line of Justin Crandall, Caleb Herbert, and Austin Farley had a pretty good weekend in Houghton.

There are four games left in the 2012 calendar year for UMD. Those four games could tell the tale of the Bulldogs' chances in the second half of the college hockey season.

Christian Ponder Running Out Of Time

Posted on 10:13 by Unknown
A few things I will say are absolutely true with no arguments:

Adrian Peterson is the best player in the NFL. If the Vikings had two more wins, he'd be a serious candidate for MVP, and he probably should be anyway. Unfortunately, we have a somewhat warped idea of what an MVP is, and the MVP can't come off a 6-6 team that is probably on its way to 7-9 more than on its way to the playoffs.

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: UMD Gets Much Needed Touchdown, Win

Posted on 06:36 by Unknown
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Earlier in the week, I crabbed about how UMD has seen a pretty notable decline in its even-strength scoring this season.

Apparently, someone is tired of my whining.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- It's not exactly a snowglobe this time around.

I don't think Houghton has much more snow -- if more at all -- than Duluth does. A nice, uneventful drive here.

The good? Any time a team is struggling, the coach will take the bye. UMD, winless in three and with three goals scored over those three games, certainly isn't in a position to turn down a bye.

Game 2: Ohio State at UMD

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
According to last year's UMD media guide, Friday's 6-2 win over Ohio State marks UMD's most lopsided season-opening victory since a 12-4 win over U.S. International to kick off the 1985-86 season.

(That doesn't count exhibitions, since exhibition games don't count in the standings.)

The previous mark under Scott Sandelin was a 5-2 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in the 2002 Maverick Stampede.

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: Well, That Was A Good Start

Posted on 05:32 by Unknown
UMD head coach Scott Sandelin looks at Opening Night as a starting point.

He has to like the point his players gave him to start from Friday.

UMD overwhelmed Ohio State 6-2 at Amsoil Arena, using dynamic freshmen, experienced skill players, and plenty of snarl to frustrate the young but capable Buckeyes for most of the evening.

In my slew of season preview materials, I mentioned a few keys to

Game 1: Ohio State at UMD

Posted on 15:09 by Unknown
Here we go.

Time to kick off the 2012-13 UMD men's hockey season. It's nice to see Steve Rohlik again, as the man who helped build this program as an assistant coach for a decade at UMD is now working with old college teammate Mark Osiecki at Ohio State.

Rohlik got a bit emotional reminiscing before the morning skate Friday, and he joked his daughters will probably be cheering for UMD in this

UMD Starts Anew, Hopes Not To Start Over

Posted on 06:39 by Unknown
It's one thing to have to rebuild.

After UMD made the 2004 NCAA Frozen Four, UMD was never able to put it together in the 2004-2005 season. A slew of freshmen -- 11 of them -- came on board for the 05-06 campaign, one that saw only 11 wins as UMD tried to rebuild its talent base.

Three years later, UMD was back in the NCAA hunt. The WCHA playoff champions rode the hot stick of senior center

2012-13 UMD Hockey Preview: Forwards

Posted on 06:23 by Unknown
For being 5-8 and 160 pounds, Jack Connolly casts one hell of a shadow.

After four years, three All-American honors, three NCAA Tournament appearances, a national championship, a Hobey Baker Award, and 197 career points, Connolly has taken his talents to Sweden to play professionally in the Swedish Elite League.

On the surface, Connolly's departure -- coupled with the losses of offensive stars

2012-13 UMD Hockey Preview: Defensemen

Posted on 18:11 by Unknown
When Justin Faulk and Mike Montgomery -- among others -- departed from UMD after helping the Bulldogs to the 2011 NCAA title, they left some question marks behind.

UMD had bodies on defense last season, but no one knew going in how it was going to play out. While there were some bright spots, the Bulldogs also had their share of struggles against forecheck pressure at times, and the defense had

2012-13 UMD Hockey Preview: Goalies

Replacing an All-American who practically carried a No. 7 seed to a league championship and NCAA berth wasn't going to be easy.

And Kenny Reiter wasn't expected to be the guy carrying the torch.

Indeed he was, though. Reiter, of Pittsburgh, came in to UMD out of the North American Hockey League -- regarded as the second-best junior league in the country behind the USHL -- and he sat for his

Packers Apparently Paranoid As Well As Not Very Good Right Now

Posted on 06:41 by Unknown
I think it's safe to say frustration is setting in for the Green Bay Packers.

I don't think that's necessarily a good thing, but only time will tell for certain.

Sometimes, the news reports on NFL teams on Wednesdays can be a little scarce. Teams typically give Tuesdays off to the players, with Wednesday being the first day of practice ahead of a Sunday game.

This time around, the Packers

UMD Hockey Loading for Future

The 2011-12 UMD men's hockey season saw perhaps the most decorated senior class in school history depart.

A group that included goalie Kenny Reiter, defensemen Brady Lamb and Scott Kishel, and forwards Jack Connolly, Travis Oleksuk, and David Grun ushered in a beautiful new arena (the still-a-gem Amsoil Arena), won a national championship, were a part of four straight 20-plus win seasons, and

With the Packers holding on to a 12-7 lead late in Monday's eventual "loss" to Seattle, I texted a friend/co-worker, a Vikings fan who was enamored with the way Green Bay clawed back and took the lead.

Livid at two horrific calls against the Packers in a Seattle drive, and already practically foaming at the mouth after the shenanigans at the Metrodome Sunday*, I had seen enough.

WCHA Preseason Media Poll: Nerd Factor

Vikings Sit Starters Thursday

Did you watch the Vikings game against San Diego on Friday night?

It wasn't good.

The Chargers were sitting 18 starters, including a number of their elite defensive players. Most notably, cornerback Quentin Jammer was sidelined. By no means do I think the Chargers are a one- or two-man operation on defense, but one would think so many guys out would give Minnesota an advantage.

Or not.

Kevin Durant Is Becoming What LeBron James Can't Be

Posted on 06:07 by Unknown
I don't watch much NBA basketball, but after the New Jersey Devils found a way to stay alive in the Stanley Cup Final Wednesday, I flipped over to TNT and caught the last 14 minutes or so of the San Antonio Spurs' season.

This didn't seem to be a likely scenario as the hockey game was playing out. The Spurs led by 15 points early in the game, saw it peak at 18 in the second quarter, and took a

I want to send sympathies to the family and friends of Dick Stewart. The longtime Duluth hockey supporter died Monday night at the age of 92, just nine days after he lost his wife of 63 years, Maxine. Stewart was a fixture at UMD hockey games, listening on the radio after his eyes failed him, but rarely missing a game. It became a tradition for the UMD students to chant his name as he waved his

Nicklas Lidstrom's Timing Off?

Much has been made of last week's retirement announcement by Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom.

(I wrote two pieces for SB Nation regarding Lidstrom's decision. This one talks about Lidstrom's greatness, both on and off the ice. After I took a shower, I wrote this one, which contains lots of speculation about how it could affect the free agent status of Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter,

The Brewers Season Summed Up In 122 Words

This is all that needs to be said.

Teammates were left shaking their heads as word spread in the visitors' clubhouse Monday that catcher Jonathan Lucroy had injured his right hand in a bizarre hotel-room accident, the latest in a long line of Brewers to go down.Lucroy will miss 4-6 weeks with what the Brewers termed a "boxer's fracture" of the right hand. Mike McCarthy Recognizes Obvious Problems With Packers

Posted on 09:07 by Unknown
The Green Bay Packers did not tackle well last season, on their way to a divisional round playoff loss to the New York Giants.

I don't think I'm breaking new ground here.

The Packers struggled all season with fundamentals surrounding tackling, catching, and protecting the ball. Aaron Rodgers didn't throw a lot of interceptions, and he completed nearly 70 percent of his throws, but he was

The Minnesota Vikings were 3-13 in 2011. There are noticeable holes at wide receiver, offensive tackle, defensive tackle, cornerback, and safety. It could be argued that the Vikings needed to get three and perhaps four immediate starters out of this draft to fill the holes that clearly exist.

ESPN Announces College Hockey Tournament Coverage Plans

Posted on 09:39 by Unknown
I'll present the ESPN information to you, largely because I know many of you are interested in watching the NCAA Tournament, and because a lot of you won't be traveling to regionals or the Frozen Four, even if UMD is involved.

This came from the Worldwide Leader in Sports Other Than Hockey on Wednesday.

For the eighth consecutive year, ESPN will present every glass-crushing moment of the 2012

Jason Garrison Makes History

Posted on 04:55 by Unknown
It's been a hell of a year for Florida defenseman and former UMD Bulldog Jason Garrison. He spent much of the season leading NHL defensemen in goals, and he made some history Tuesday night in Sunrise. During Florida's 5-2 win over Toronto, Garrison tallied his 15th goal of the season, tying a Panthers franchise record held by Jay Bouwmeester and Brian McCabe.

The goal comes at around the

WCHA Final Five Set

Posted on 06:43 by Unknown
Thanks to Denver's 3-2 overtime win over Wisconsin Sunday night, the field of six is finally set for the WCHA Final Five, which starts Thursday in St. Paul.

Luke Salazar's wrap-around at 1:40 of overtime pushed the Pioneers into the field, and likely locked DU into the NCAA Tournament, meaning the WCHA will get four teams -- and maybe five -- into the tournament.

Here is the Final Five schedule

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: Work to Do, But UMD Starts Playoffs Strong

Posted on 07:45 by Unknown
Friday night was a pretty good example of playoff hockey, not only in Duluth but many other WCHA venues.

Games were tight on the scoreboard. Many of the games were "loosely" officiated, meaning the standard for a penalty was blatantly obvious (too many men) or flagrant (foul from behind on a breakaway).

In Duluth, only three minor penalties were served, and a fourth was called that led to a

UMD Ready to Crank It Up Again

Posted on 07:36 by Unknown
The ultimate prize has yet to be decided, by any stretch. That doesn't happen until April 7, when two teams will collide in Tampa for the right to spend the year known as the national champions.

However, the drive to Tampa is underway in college hockey, as the five Division I leagues hold their postseason tournaments. On the line? Automatic bids to the NCAAs for tournament champions, but there

WCHA Road Warriors Seek Upsets

Posted on 08:33 by Unknown
For six WCHA teams, the chance to be at home for the first round of the WCHA playoffs this weekend certainly presents a tremendous opportunity. Of course, that's not to discount road teams.

Road teams have been traditionally competitive, if not successful, in these opening-round series. In fact, in the last six years, only once (2010) have the home teams swept through the first round unscathed.

Justin Faulk Wins One For Carolina

Posted on 08:44 by Unknown
There was some chatter on Twitter a few weeks ago about former UMD defenseman Justin Faulk being a candidate for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie.

I chuckled a bit, and didn't take it all that seriously.

Now, I am.

Faulk continues to play big minutes, and his contributions are increasing virtually every time I look. Tuesday night, he scored the overtime winner for the

2012 All-WCHA Ballot

Posted on 06:41 by Unknown
Geez, this is difficult. I mean, there are always hard decisions, but this year seemed more difficult than most.

I tried to flesh out some of the award candidates this week, but in some cases, I made the picture cloudier for myself.

After a couple hours spent Saturday looking at the ballot, moving people around, and complaining about the decisions on Twitter, I've filled out a complete ballot.

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: UMD Blows Another Chance

Posted on 06:54 by Unknown
ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- It wasn't long after Friday's game here started before those of us in the press box were well aware of the opportunity presented to UMD.

Wisconsin scored once in the first period, then added three in a stunning second period, on its way to a 4-1 win over Minnesota at Mariucci Arena. That Minnesota loss swung the door wide open for UMD to get in position for the WCHA regular

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- After an absence of 860 days during which UMD has played at least four games in every other WCHA building, the Bulldogs are finally back in St. Cloud.

It's as we left it, which is a big part of why the school is undertaking a huge project to remake the arena. You'll hear more on that from head coach Bob Motzko during the first intermission of the game broadcast.

It's been 860 days.

The last time UMD made a trip to St. Cloud, Trent Palm and Mike Montgomery were the top defensive pairing, Brady Hjelle was the starting goalie, and the programs had a rather healthy rivalry, much of which was left over from the 2007 WCHA playoffs.

WCHA Awards: First Team Forwards

Posted on 06:08 by Unknown
While a couple individual award races in the WCHA should prove to be interesting, I wanted to take a little bit to focus on what should be a fun little problem for voters, and that's the fact that only three forwards can make the All-WCHA first team.

In all honesty, this could be the toughest decision I've had to make in seven years of calling games. In most years, you have a slam-dunk couple of

Now, it's time to look at the race for top coach. Like Rookie of the Year, the Coach of the Year award is a simple vote for the participating media and other panelists. There isn't a first team, second team, and third team. Just one name.

In between, you could see why UMD so badly missed the sophomore winger, even though it got three points out of its one series without him, last weekend against Minnesota State. When UMD rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to earn a 3-3 tie at Wisconsin in December, it was deemed a good point by everyone on the UMD side.

They were right.

Along the way, I got a couple questions from people asking what would constitute a "bad point,"

UMD Wants To Go Streaking Again

Posted on 06:37 by Unknown
Two weeks ago, UMD experienced the unfamiliar feeling of a loss. The Bulldogs hadn't lost in 18 games, and it doesn't sound like they enjoyed the feeling very much.

"It was pretty special," sophomore forward Joe Basaraba said of the streak. "We can't sit back now that we've started a new one. We got two here, we're looking for number three on Friday night."

I've mentioned this before, but the

Jack Connolly Marches Toward History

Posted on 08:18 by Unknown
Jack Connolly's season goes beyond his Hobey Baker candidacy, his point streak, his exemplary work as UMD's captain, or his march up UMD's all-time scoring list.

The UMD senior center had four points last weekend -- including three on Saturday -- in a non-conference sweep of Alabama-Huntsville. That lifted Connolly into sole possession of 12th place on UMD's all-time list with 177 points. It

Jason Garrison Leads Successful Group of UMD Alumni in NHL

Posted on 11:06 by Unknown

One of the prices you pay for success in college hockey is the risk of losing star players early to professional hockey. Sometimes, even losing teams can have players coveted by the pros.Defenseman Jason Garrison played at UMD from 2005-2008, flashing his big slapshot at times and developing his game enough that he got noticed by pro scouts. Garrison signed as a free agent with the Florida

Dom Toninato Commits as UMD Makes Recruiting Noise

Posted on 09:42 by Unknown
Within a couple days of UMD winning the NCAA title last April, I had already grown tired of people -- both in and out of the Twin Ports area -- asking if the championship would make a difference in UMD's recruiting.

After all, the Bulldogs had already secured the services of players like forwards Tony Camaranesi and Kyle Osterberg, defenseman Andy Welinski, and goalie Matt McNeely, and while I

Brendan Shanahan's Biggest Challenge So Far: Suspend Alex Ovechkin?

Posted on 06:46 by Unknown
Since taking over as the NHL's dean of discipline, there have been a lot of tough decisions for Brendan Shanahan and his group in the Department of Player Safety.

Outside of dropping the ball a couple times -- most notably involving hits on Minnesota Wild players -- Shanahan and his people have done a pretty good job.

But Shanahan's biggest challenge comes Monday, when he has a hearing with

Game 24: Alabama-Huntsville at UMD

Posted on 16:03 by Unknown
Unhappy with most of his team's Friday night effort, UMD coach Scott Sandelin is looking for more in Saturday's series finale.

Alabama-Huntsville kept UMD largely in check Friday night, and the Bulldogs seemed to struggle more as the game went on.

We'll see how this one goes, with some changes for UMD.

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: UAH Future Looking Better

Posted on 11:10 by Unknown
It's been a hell of a few months for second-year head coach Chris Luongo and Alabama-Huntsville. Faced with plenty of gloom and doom surrounding his independent program already, the Chargers players found out early in the season that this would be their last season as a varsity program.

Many in the community and among UAH's alumni protested, and Luongo was recently made aware of his team's

Bulldogs Back Home Again

Posted on 08:15 by Unknown

After nine weeks, it's nice to have a home game to look forward to again.

UMD is back at Amsoil Arena to host Alabama-Huntsville in a two-game series. The Chargers aren't having a good year -- 2-22-1 playing an independent schedule that includes just ten home games out of 31 total -- but they are coming off a weekend split at Denver Jan. 6-7, a split that came after it was announced the

North Dakota, Gophers Misbehave Again; Announcer Off the Rails, Coach Angry

Posted on 15:20 by Unknown
Outside of Danny Kristo's hit from behind, last Friday's North Dakota-Minnesota game was relatively tame. Just two rivals playing a hard, physical game that ended on a third-period goal by Brock Nelson.

Saturday was more of the same, for the most part. Minnesota defenseman Mark Alt was sent off for a hit from behind, but otherwise, the game stayed clean until the clock was at zeroes.

Blais Comments on Zombo Suspension

Posted on 06:49 by Unknown
On Tuesday, the WCHA shocked some -- namely me -- by suspending Nebraska Omaha freshman forward Dominic Zombo one game for a kneeing incident during Saturday's game against UMD.

If you were listening to our broadcast, or you follow me on Twitter, you know how upset I was by the hit. Zombo clearly was guilty of a blatant knee-on-knee hit on JT Brown, a hit that probably should have been a

Packers Post-Mortem: Plenty of Blame to Go Around

Posted on 07:23 by Unknown
Yes, we know. The Packers lost.

It was glorious, assuming you're not a fan of the Packers. And I don't blame you one bit for thinking it was glorious. Packer fans can be an insufferable bunch, especially when their favorite team looks like it's going to repeat.

The team isn't going to repeat now. A virtual no-show against the New York Giants Sunday made that a certainty.

Game 22: UMD at Nebraska Omaha

Posted on 14:55 by Unknown
OMAHA, Neb. -- After Friday's sellout promotion, the crowd doesn't look to be as big for Saturday's finale. There are large pieces of tarp over a large part of the seating in the higher reaches of this facility. If the rest of the seats are filled, you're probably looking at a crowd in the neighborhood of 11,000 at the most.

UMD tries to run its unbeaten streak to 18, and improve to 13-0-3 away

Saturday Hockey Notes and Thoughts: The Train Keeps A Rolling

Posted on 06:45 by Unknown

OMAHA, Neb. -- For the UMD men's hockey team, it's unquestionably been an awesome ride.

J.T. Brown made sure it continued.

The sophomore's career night Friday helped UMD past Nebraska Omaha 6-2 in front of over 16,000 paid customers, a record crowd for this program. It was a monumental night for UNO hockey, but the Bulldogs did their thing and ruined it.

UMD used a four-goal third period to

UMD Stays Humble Through Streak, Ready for Test From UNO

Posted on 18:32 by Unknown
OMAHA, Neb. -- It's almost getting to the point where UMD's next loss can be greeted by a table talking about what the price of gas was the last time UMD lost, or how much it cost to buy a gallon of milk. That's somewhat sarcastic, but Oct. 15 was a long time ago. After all, we had no idea the Wild would be good.(Wait, we still don't really know. Carry on.)The 16-game unbeaten streak is something
